After teaching middle school math, Hooks decided to follow her passion to write books for children. Since then she has written several popular early readers for Stone Arch Books (Capstone), Just for You! (Scholastic), andBebop Books' (Lee & Low). Hooks lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with her husband.
