SATA III to M.2 (NGFF) / mSATA SSD Conversion Card — Adapter Card Switchboard
Upgrade or repurpose SSDs with a universal SATA3 adapter board that accepts both M.2 (NGFF SATA) and mSATA drives and presents them to your system as a standard 2.5" SATA III device. Ideal for migrating data, extending the life of older laptops/desktops, or turning spare SATA-protocol M.2/mSATA SSDs into drop-in replacements.
What It Does
-
Converts a SATA-protocol M.2 (NGFF, B-key/B+M-key) or mSATA SSD to a 2.5" SATA III (6 Gb/s)
interface.
- Lets you use common 2.5" bays, caddies, or USB-to-SATA docks with compact SSD formats.
Note: This board supports SATA-based M.2 drives only. NVMe (PCIe) M.2 SSDs are not compatible.
Key Features
-
Dual-Form-Factor Support: One board handles M.2 2242/2260/2280 (SATA) and mSATA
(mini-SATA) modules—select the slot you need.
-
SATA III 6 Gb/s Throughput: Backward compatible with SATA II/I; no drivers needed for Windows, macOS, Linux.
- 2.5" Drive Form Factor: Standard 7 mm height fits most laptop bays and desktop trays.
- Solid Signal Integrity: Short trace layout and gold-plated connectors for reliable high-speed transfers.
- Status LEDs (model-dependent): Power/activity indicators for quick diagnostics.
- Tool-Free/Minimal Tools: Standoffs and screws included for secure mounting of different M.2 lengths.
Benefits
-
Maximize Parts You Already Own: Reuse SATA M.2 or mSATA SSDs pulled from ultrabooks or mini-PCs in standard 2.5" bays.
-
Easy Migration/Cloning: Drop the assembled adapter into a SATA bay or USB-SATA dock to clone OS drives or expand storage.
- Cost-Effective Upgrades: Cheaper than buying a new 2.5" SSD when you have spare modules.
- Plug-and-Play: No firmware or drivers—your system sees a standard SATA drive.
Typical Specifications (may vary by batch)
- Host Interface: SATA III 6 Gb/s (7-pin data + 15-pin power)
- SSD Slots: 1× M.2 (NGFF SATA, B-key/B+M-key) or 1× mSATA (use one at a time)
- Supported M.2 Lengths: 2242 / 2260 / 2280 with screw positions
- Form Factor: 2.5" 7 mm housing or PCB-only (enclosure model-dependent)
- OS Compatibility: Windows / macOS / Linux (native AHCI)
- LEDs: PWR / ACT (optional)
- Operating Modes: AHCI SATA; NVMe not supported
Installation Guide
- Power Down & Ground: Shut off the PC; discharge static (ESD).
-
Choose Slot: Identify your SSD type—mSATA or M.2 SATA—and insert into the correct
connector at a slight angle.
- Secure SSD: Press down and fix with the standoff screw (select hole for 2242/2260/2280).
- Mount Adapter: If using a 2.5" enclosure, close the shell; otherwise place the board in the 2.5" bay.
- Connect Cables: Attach standard SATA data and power connectors.
- Boot & Initialize: System will detect as a SATA drive; partition/clone as needed.
Compatibility Notes
- M.2 NVMe (M-key PCIe) is not supported. Look for “SATA” or “AHCI” on the M.2 label.
-
Works in laptops/desktops, NAS (if it accepts 2.5" SATA), and USB-to-SATA docks/enclosures.
- Some ultra-thin caddies require 7 mm height—choose the thin enclosure variant.
Use Cases
- Laptop Revive: Replace a failing 2.5" HDD with an existing M.2 SATA SSD via this adapter.
- Data Recovery: Read mSATA modules from old ultrabooks through a standard SATA port.
- Cloning Station: Pair with a USB-SATA dock for fast OS migration.
- Embedded/Industrial: Standardize on 2.5" connectors while sourcing compact SATA modules.
What’s in the Box
- SATA3 to M.2 (NGFF SATA)/mSATA adapter board (2.5" form factor)
- M.2 standoffs & screws (for 2242/2260/2280)
