Whether you are looking for a relaxing indoor activity or a thoughtful gift, a backgammon set provides timeless entertainment suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Description – Backgammon Set NZ

A backgammon set is a traditional two-player board game that involves moving pieces across a triangular-point board based on dice rolls, with the objective of bearing all checkers off the board before the opponent. It is one of the oldest known board games, combining strategy, probability, and tactical decision-making.

In New Zealand, backgammon sets are popular among both casual players and serious enthusiasts due to their balance of simplicity and strategic depth. They are commonly used in homes, holiday houses, clubs, and travel environments where compact and engaging entertainment is preferred.

Backgammon sets typically include a folding or fixed board, 30 playing checkers (15 per player), a pair of dice, and a doubling cube used in advanced play. The board is divided into four quadrants with 24 narrow triangles known as points, arranged in alternating colours.

Materials vary depending on quality and price range. Entry-level sets are often made from lightweight plastic or MDF with printed playing surfaces, making them affordable and portable. Mid-range sets may use vinyl-covered boards or wooden finishes, while premium sets feature solid wood construction, leather exteriors, or inlaid decorative detailing for a more luxurious appearance.

Many backgammon sets are designed to be foldable, allowing the pieces to be stored inside the board when closed. This makes them highly portable and suitable for travel or storage in compact spaces. Some sets include magnetic components to keep pieces in place during movement, which is especially useful for travel use.

The aesthetic design of backgammon sets varies widely. Classic sets often feature traditional black, white, and red tones, while modern versions may include custom colours, artistic patterns, or luxury finishes designed for display in game rooms or living areas.

Backgammon is widely appreciated in New Zealand as both a recreational and social game. It encourages strategic thinking, probability assessment, and decision-making skills while providing an engaging and competitive experience.
