How to Check Men’s Clothing Size in CM: A Complete Guide for Kiwi Shoppers
When it comes to buying clothes, getting the perfect fit is essential for comfort, style, and confidence. However, shopping for men's clothing—especially when purchasing online or from international stores—can often lead to frustration, especially if you’re unsure of how to measure your size or convert it to the right fit.
In New Zealand, where we love fashion and value comfort, understanding how to check men’s clothing size in cm is an important skill. Unlike traditional sizing methods, where sizing numbers vary from brand to brand, the metric system (using centimetres) can provide a more accurate and reliable approach to determining your correct size.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about checking your men’s clothing size in centimetres. Whether you’re shopping for jeans, shirts, suits, or jackets, we’ll help you take the guesswork out of size fitting so that you can shop confidently for perfectly fitting clothes in New Zealand.
Understanding Men’s Clothing Sizes in Centimetres
When it comes to clothing sizes, most brands use a combination of numbers and measurements, such as small, medium, large, or specific numeric sizes like 38, 40, and 42. However, this can vary greatly across brands and countries. The metric system, using centimetres (cm), is a universal standard, offering precise measurements that make it easier to match your body size to the clothes.
Why Is It Important to Know Your Size in Centimetres?
In New Zealand, we’re increasingly shopping internationally or from stores that use centimetres for sizing. Whether you're purchasing a tailored suit, a fitted shirt, or casual jeans, knowing your measurements in centimetres will help you:
- Accurately convert between international and local sizing standards.
- Shop for clothes that fit you better, saving you time and frustration.
- Reduce the need for returns due to incorrect sizing.
- Make informed decisions when buying online, ensuring you order the right size the first time.
How to Measure Men’s Clothing Size in Centimetres
Before you can check your size in cm, you’ll need to know how to properly measure key areas of your body. For men’s clothing, the most important measurements are the chest, waist, hips, and inseam. Let’s break down each one.
Chest Measurement
The chest measurement is essential for shirts, jackets, suits, and other upper body garments. To measure your chest:
- Stand upright and relax your arms at your sides.
- Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under your arms and across the shoulder blades.
- Keep the tape comfortably snug but not tight.
- Take the measurement in centimetres and round it up to the nearest whole number.
Tip: For shirts and jackets, it's important to measure your chest over a shirt that fits well, as clothing layers will affect the fit.
Waist Measurement
The waist measurement is key for pants, shorts, jeans, and suits. To measure your waist:
- Stand up straight and relax your stomach muscles.
- Find your natural waistline, which is typically located just above your belly button.
- Wrap the measuring tape around your waist, keeping it parallel to the floor.
- Make sure the tape is snug but not digging into your skin.
- Record the measurement in centimetres.
Tip: Men often have a slimmer waistline than their pant size suggests, so don’t overestimate. If you’re in-between sizes, go for the larger size for comfort.
Hip Measurement
Hip measurements are typically needed for jeans, pants, and shorts. Here’s how to measure your hips:
- Stand with your feet close together.
- Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks.
- Make sure the tape is parallel to the floor and comfortable but snug.
- Record the measurement in centimetres.
Tip: Take this measurement at the widest part of your hips to ensure a good fit in jeans and other pants.
Inseam Measurement
The inseam is the length of your pants or jeans and is measured from the crotch to the bottom of the ankle. To measure your inseam:
- Stand straight with your legs slightly apart.
- Have a friend measure from the crotch area (where the leg seams meet) down to the desired length at the ankle.
-
Alternatively, use a pair of well-fitting pants to measure inseam by laying them flat and measuring from the crotch to the
hem.
Tip: If you’re unsure of the inseam length, it’s always safer to choose a slightly longer inseam. You can always get the pants hemmed.
Converting Men’s Clothing Sizes from Inches to Centimetres
Once you’ve measured key areas of your body in centimetres, you may need to convert them from inches to cm, as some brands still use imperial measurements. To convert inches to centimetres, simply multiply the inch measurement by 2.54. For example:
- Chest: 40 inches x 2.54 = 102 cm
- Waist: 32 inches x 2.54 = 81.28 cm
Alternatively, you can use online size conversion charts provided by most clothing stores or online retailers in New Zealand.
How to Choose the Right Size Based on Your Measurements
Once you have your body measurements in centimetres, the next step is to match them to the right clothing size. Different brands may have slightly different sizing charts, but generally speaking, you’ll find that sizes range from small (S) to extra-large (XXL), with numeric sizes for tailored garments like shirts and suits.
Shirt Size
For men’s shirts, the size is typically based on chest measurement and neck size. Refer to the chart below to find your shirt size based on your chest measurement in centimetres:
- Chest 90–96 cm = Small (S)
- Chest 97–102 cm = Medium (M)
- Chest 103–109 cm = Large (L)
- Chest 110–116 cm = Extra Large (XL)
For neck size, you’ll typically find a corresponding measurement for shirt collars. Make sure to add a finger’s width between the collar and neck for comfort.
Pants Size
Pants sizes usually rely on both waist and inseam measurements. Once you have your waist measurement, refer to the following size chart:
- Waist 76–81 cm = Size 30
- Waist 82–87 cm = Size 32
- Waist 88–93 cm = Size 34
- Waist 94–99 cm = Size 36
For inseam, measure based on your desired pant length. Most pants come in short, regular, and long inseam options.
Jacket Size
For jackets and suits, your chest measurement in centimetres will usually determine your size. A general guideline is:
- Chest 91–96 cm = 36
- Chest 97–102 cm = 38
- Chest 103–109 cm = 40
- Chest 110–116 cm = 42
Many brands will also include the corresponding shoulder width and sleeve length to ensure a good fit, especially for tailored suits.
Where to Find Men’s Clothing Size Charts in New Zealand
In New Zealand, most retailers and online stores provide their own detailed size charts. You can find these on their product pages, typically under the sizing section. Leading stores like The Warehouse, Hallenstein Brothers, and Farmers in New Zealand offer local size guides to ensure a better fit.
Some international retailers may also provide sizing charts that convert to NZ measurements. Always check the store’s size guide and read customer reviews about fit before purchasing online.
Final Thoughts: Make Shopping for Men’s Clothing in NZ Easier with Accurate Measurements
Knowing how to check your men’s clothing size in cm is essential for getting the best fit, especially in a world where sizing standards vary from country to country and brand to brand. Whether you’re shopping for casual wear, a professional suit, or sportswear, taking the time to measure yourself accurately and refer to size charts will ensure that you’re always confident in your choices.
With the right knowledge of how to measure your chest, waist, hips, and inseam in centimetres, you can shop with ease, save time, and avoid the hassle of returns. Whether buying locally or online in New Zealand, understanding your size will help you find clothes that fit comfortably, look great, and suit your lifestyle.
